I'm a bit sad that we can't do screen printing, but at least I can learn new skills in Photoshop to further enhance my screen printing skills. Here are some notes, artist refelctions and ideas:
For this task I wanted to dedicate a connecting theme of rooms in the house. Each collage is dedicated to a particular room. I chose the bathroom, living room, bedroom, laundry and kitchen. To connect each image, I decided to incorporate a checkerboard pattern element, because I really love the pattern and it is something that is seen in a number of domestic settings. Each work contains a variety of my own photos, as well as photos from the internet. I wanted to make the collages very trippy and weird, to allow the viewer to have their own interpretation of the artwork. The aim is to confuse the viewer, make them laugh and make them question the artwork. The works include distortions of objects and patterns, with varying filters and transparancies.
This is from a 70's tea towell at home, for the kitchen work. I love this print.
This is a very memorable bathroom that was in a house I visited once in Canberra. I love the mint green tiles and bath and the checker board tiles. My dream bathroom.
That same house has this incredible kitchen too!
This pattern is from a beautiful dress that I own. I had to include in one of my works.
This work is my favourite one: 'Bath Time'. Following inspiration from the bathroom I included earlier, I brainstormed what things I associate with the bathroom, and the feelings it brings up. The tile floor inspired me to include a warped checker board background. Warping the images makes them more bizarre, which is the reaction I want to give the viewer, I want them to feel confused and question the story behind the work. The women with her hairy armpits represents the role of women in the bathroom, and the expectations society has on women's grooming. The tap breaks up the composition and the feet represents relaxation.
'Dinner time' is about the experiences we have in the kitchen. I wanted to make this one especially weird with closeups of chewing and bendy forks. It represents a domestic environment we know all too well, and it questions the reasons things take place in this particular room. I chose the background as a tea towel from my kitchen as it is very beautiful and works well with the other colours in the work.
'Laundry time' is probably the weirdest one. It has no other meaning or intention but to be a bit of nonsense. All these photos I found on the internet. Continuing with the checker board pattern helps it link with the rest of the series. I thought it was funny and amusing to put the people in the washing machine. This work is just things that came to mind as I thought of them. I didn't plan anything in particular for any of the collages.
'Bed Time' is of course, about the bedroom. Of course, in the bedroom we sleep, hence the images of people sleeping and the satin representing the sheets. The bedroom is also for gross things like my dental retainers. I also have a bad habit of grinding my teeth, hence the teeth. But of course, the bedroom is a very sexual place, which is a theme I wanted to focus on for this task. Hence, the sexual references of the condoms, tissues, and sexy underwear. This work is about the contrast between the sexy and the unsexy. The bedroom is a place for sleep, for keeping my gross things like my dental retainers, but it is also for sex. Everything can happen in the bedroom. Next time I want to include everything that happens here, like eating, studying, getting dressed, storing miscellaneous objects, etc, etc.
'Longe room time' is of course, about the lounge room. This includes a lot of my own images, such as the background, the mid-century ceramic ornaments, the lamp, and one of my own artworks in the background. This one isn't as deep, its just about showcasing my own objects in my house, and achieving a unique and bizarre composition.
Here is a closer image of the work in the background. I chose it because it is also bizarre and it contains the reoccurring checker board pattern. 'Consumed by Desire' is a screenprint that I completed at Megalo over the summer holidays.
